Welcome to the February edition of the OSCAR newsletter! We are excited to share the latest updates, features, and achievements from our community.

Version 1.6.0 Released!

Highlights of this release include:

• Algebraic Geometry: Added the f4ncgb algorithm for non-commutative Gröbner basis computation and factoring_standard_basis utilizing Singular.jl.
• Groups: Improved handling of matrix groups over number fields, added subspace iterators for finite vector spaces, and introduced a constructive membership test for double cosets.
• Number Theory: Major performance boost in orthogonal group computations and isometry testing for integer lattices via a new decomposition approach.
• Combinatorics: New support for constructing PhylogeneticTree objects from graphs and the addition of multicombinations with optional "inplace" iteration.
• Polyhedral Geometry: Introduced transformations for polyhedral fans and complexes, alongside castelnuovo functions for lattice polytopes.
• Specialized Tools: Introduction of tropical polyhedra types and enhanced sheaf cohomology computations in Toric Geometry.

Papers Using OSCAR:

• Willem A. de Graf in his new preprint describes Computing the Zariski closure of a finitely generated matrix group including an implementation within OSCAR
• Martin Bies, Miķelis E. Miķelsons, and Andrew P. Turner introduce in their new paper FTheoryTools: Advancing Computational Capabilities for F-Theory Research a new OSCAR module that automates complex geometric computations and data management for string phenomenology research.
• Tommy Hofmann introduces a new algorithm for Determining unit groups and K₁ of finite rings in his new paper, which will be available in the next official OSCAR release
• Alheydis Geiger and Francesca Zaffalon introduce The Self-Projecting Grassmannian in their new preprint, together with a computational study of the realization spaces of self-projecting matroids inside this Grassmannian which will be stored in OSCAR.
• Tobias Boege, Antony Della Vecchia, Marina Garrote-López and Benjamin Hollering introduce in their preprint Algebraic Statistics in OSCAR the AlgebraicStatistics section of OSCAR.

In Memoriam:

Hans Schönemann passed away on December 28, 2025. A founding member of the OSCAR team and a central contributor to Singular, Hans was a respected expert in computer algebra and a valued colleague and friend. He will be deeply missed.

Lars Göttgens (Total contributions last 12 months: 2,426)

Lars Göttgens is a PhD student at RWTH Aachen University and a core OSCAR contributor. He works on algebraic Lie theory and symmetric tensor categories, and builds key interfaces that improve interoperability across OSCAR. Follow him on GitHub: lgoettgens.
